IN PICS: Órgiva in La Alpujarra hosts the 28th ‘Hecho en la Alpujarra’ artisan fair to celebrate local craft, food, and culture

ÓRGIVA is hosting one of its main spring events, coinciding with Semana Santa (Holy Week). The market town, ‘Capital of La Alpujarra’, again welcomes ‘Feria de Turismo, Artesanía y Alimentación “Hecho en la Alpujarra’. Now in its 28th year (although it skipped one iteration during Covid), the four-day fair celebrates the cultural and culinary offerings of the region, with 30 stalls.

Taking place from 17 to 20 April, and inaugurated yesterday buy officials from the ayuntamiento (town hall), the fair is expected to draw thousands of visitors from the region. Here, they will encounter handcrafted goods, traditional foods, and workshops. As well as wine tasting, which South of Granada enjoyed today, there are samples of cheese and bread.

A platform for local producers

Originally launched by former mayor Francisco Pino, the fair was conceived as a way to showcase the work of artisans and food producers from across La Alpujarra. With support from Órgiva Town Hall, the Junta de Andalucía, and the Diputación de Granada, the event has grown in popularity and now takes place in a large ‘carpa’ (tent) in the town’s most central carpark (clearly, minus the cars).

The various stalls offer ‘jamon serrano’, cheese, wine, ceramics, leather goods, esparto baskets, and locally produced olive oil and honey. You can speak directly with producers, many of whom have been trading for several generations. Remember not to drink too many samples of the local ‘vino’ if you are driving!

Keeping traditions alive

Organisers have ensured that the fair promotes cultural exchange, and appeals to all ages. The programme incldues live craft demonstrations – including weaving and perfume-making – musical performances, walks around the local area, inflatables for the children, and guided tours to Órgiva’s historic sites.

In recent years, the fair has attracted over 30,000 visitors, boosting the local economy. It is the ideal place to buy some local produce, or a thoughtful gift.
