BRITS living in Granada and Málaga areas who fly to the North East of England are regaining the previously popular Easyjet route between Málaga Airport (AGP) and Newcastle Airport (NCL) from 31 March 2025.
EasyJet closed its base at Newcastle Airport in September 2020, during the Covid-19 pandemic, as part of a cost-cutting initiative. Quarantine measures in the UK and Spain caused demand for air travel to slump, and financial issues for the carrier. Alongside Newcastle Airport, Easyjet closed another two bases at London Stanstead and London Southend.
Limited operations
At the time, EasyJet said it would retain limited operations from Newcastle, maintaining routes to Nice (the only overseas one), Belfast, and Bristol.
Fortunately for Newcastle Airport, most destinations previously served by Easyjet were also covered by other airlines. The airport management expressed its disappointment at losing the popular carrier. The base closure caused job losses amongst pilots and cabin crew. The Málaga route contined to be served by Ryanair and Jet2.
However, since Easyjet departed the base, passengers increasingly witnessed busy flights with full cabins on Ryanair, driving up fares while making it difficult to stow cabin luggage above their own seat.
The decision to reintroduce this particular route reflects the obvious resurgence in passenger interest (or over-demand), and the Costa del Sol’s enduring appeal for UK holidaymakers.
Expansion plans
The restoration of this route by Easyjet is part of a broader expansion of its network for summer 2025. The plan includes 26 new routes across Europe and beyond. As well as restoring Málaga, the airline is investing in other destinations from Newcastle Airport, incuding Amsterdam, Paris, and Alicante.
Easyjet is also growing its network at London Luton with routes to Almeria, which is useful for those flying to the South of England. This might be some consolation after Vueling pulled its direct route between Granada Airport and London airports.
So when can I fly to NCL?
Easyjet’s Newcastle to Malaga flights return from 31 March, 2025, and will operate twice a week on Mondays and Thursdays with fares from £34.99.
Additionally, Ryanair operates between Málaga and Newcastle on Mondays, Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays.
Jet2 is operating this route every day except Tuesdays and Wednesdays but (recently) has tended to have higher fares.
