14 fabulous moments from first rural drag event in Órgiva – ‘It’s a Drag’

ÓRGIVA, the ‘capital’ of the rural Alpujarra, witnessed what was possibly its first Drag Night (aside from participants in some local carnival parades!) on Saturday 12 December. A unique fixture on the town’s advent calendar, ‘It’s a Drag’ – billed as “the Alpujarra’s queer cabaret” – was a sparkling success. The drag event in Órgiva took place at Studio 2:4 – a dance studio and event space for the community.

Organisers Ruth Hardy (founder of Club 2:4) and Tansy Roake – aka Tansy Is An Artist and founder of Nuestro Estudio Órgiva – devised the concept. Initially, they thought that hosting a drag night in Órgiva, in the heart of rural Andalucia, might be a “hard sell”. However, as soon as tickets were released, the event proved popular.

The drag event in Órgiva is returning!

A sparkling soiree…

Says Tansy Roake: “The idea of ‘It’s a Drag’ is a great opportunity to champion queer art and encourage representation of queer culture and the queer community. We had the added bonus of dressing up and looking fabulous! What’s not to love?”

“The inaugural run of ‘It’s a Drag’ saw a plethora of different acts – from chair dancing to drag opera, RuPaul lip syncing, and a drag queen dominatrix disco.”

Tansy continues: “The variety and talent from the drag kings and queens was truly spectacular. When curtains closed on the queer cabaret, the dance floor came alive. In a blur of sequins and glitter, we danced the night away. Plans are already afoot for the next drag event in Órgiva.”

The second instalment of ‘It’s a Drag’ is scheduled for 15 May, 2026. Information is via @tansy.roake on Facebook, @tansyisanartist on other socials, or @ruth.e.hardy.7 on Facebook. The team is seeking anyone with “a drag king or queen inside you” that would like to perform at the 2026 event. Don’t hold back the feeling!
