Freya’s Style Tips: How to layer clothes to transition into Spain’s summertime while always looking stylish

NOT TOO keen on the current season because you’re unsure how to style your clothes and transition to the warmer months while still looking stylish? Resident style expert, Freya, gives her top tips on layering clothes in the late spring, moving into summer, to enhance your style….

Layering clothing is all about creating a balance between colours and the style of each garment. Blend neutrals with standout pieces and tight-fitting tops with looser jackets or kimonos. Here is my helpful guide to maximise your springtime and early summer style.

Tip 1: Start with basic neutrals

The foundation of layering an outfit starts with the basics. Neutral colors are a fantastic way to add some of your favorite statement pieces as the outer layer.

These colours include white, beige, black, grey, and navy blue. You can pair a simple, neutral, fitted top with a hot pink blazer and a light-wash pair of jeans. It’s an incredibly effective way to connect an outfit by using less vivid tones, all while keeping it elegant.

Tip 2: Experiment with different textures

Many people focus solely on matching colours and patterns when creating an outfit, but mixing textures is another method to consider.

Look at leather and denim, suede and cotton, wool and satin. Various textures add dimension and interest. Instead of sticking to one type of material throughout an outfit, find textures that complement one another to add interest to a layered outfit.

Tip 3: Balance loose and tight garments

One of the easiest keys to layering clothes in spring is to balance loose and tight garments. The general rule is to wear one style on top, the opposite on the bottom, and use a piece to bring it all together.

For example, style one of our cotton t-shirts that has a looser fit, and pair it with a tight, short skirt or tuck it into skinny jeans. Then, add a long, flowing cardigan, silk kimono or gilet over the top to balance the loose and tight components of the outfit. This method will help you create a more proportional outfit that complements your body type.

Tip 4: Work around a particular clothing item

Layering is challenging because all your favorite items don’t always work together. Whether it’s the fit, textures, or colors, they might not be the ideal match.

As you begin planning an outfit, find the garment you want the look to center around. It might be leather pants, your favorite pair of jeans, a pretty blouse, or a chunky, bright cardigan. Use this item and scour your wardrobe for pieces that will suit it. Now, you have an outfit you adore and get to wear the piece you’ve been longing for all this time.

It’s challenging to find harmony between clothing pieces at first. Once you get the hang of it, you’ll become an expert at layering clothes in all seasons.
