FROM the rainfall of Sunday 27 October that deposited 10cm of snow on the SIerra Nevada ski slopes, southern Spain has now suffered 24hrs of storms that have seen egg-sized hailstones break car windscreens in Almería, parts of bridges washed away, and roads closed for flooding,
Perhaps most dramatically, the A334 in Seron, Almería, developed a huge hole after a section of the road collapsed. The photo has circulated on social media, along with images of egg-sized hailstones that fell in El Ejido, Almería, smashing vehicle windscreens. This serves as a reminder to take care motoring when AEMET issues severe weather warnings. For example, don’t park under any swaying tree branches!
Good for the reservoirs
With Yellow and Orange AEMET alerts for rainfall and storms in force today, the promised intermittent (torrential) rain has fallen – and not just ‘dos gotas’ (two drops). This will be welcomed by most residents – especially those who have not incurred damages to property. Granada’s reservoirs are currently standing at just 29.66% of capacity, according to Embalses.net .
Although rain is forecast for the next few days – including potentially on Halloween night of Thursday October 31 – the ‘gotas’ are likely to fall with less intensity, as the storm front recedes.
And Halloween?
As forecasts stand at present, we are unlikely to see the mass cancellations that occurred on Halloween 2023 for wind and rain. The forthcoming Halloween night of Thursday 31 currently has zero weather warnings across the peninsula, according to AEMET.
Many municipalities are planning their main ‘castaña’ (chestnut roasting) events for Saturday November 2, by when temperatures across Granada region are forecast to rise into the low 20C degrees.
