THIS YEAR, the parade, that always occurs at 6pm on the Saturday of the San Juan weekend in the spa town of Lanjarón, featured everything from Brazilian beauties to peas in a pod. Some of the outfits had a risque feel, while others harked back to the disco era, emulated jungle animals, or were Carribean-influenced.
‘La Publica’ is an annual fixture of San Juan in Lanjarón and is one of the most popular events of the fiesta. The participants spend months preparing their fancy and detailed outfits.
A draw of tickets featuring the names of the groups determines the running order. Those who are at the back of the large parade can expect to reach the finishing point (the municipal plaza) well after dark, having consumed many ‘tinto de veranos’ on the way, and possibly with sore feet!
