ANNUALLY on 24 June, the saint’s day of San Juan in Lanjarón marks the town’s biggest event. This is the famous ‘carrera de agua’ – or water run, which is more accurately a mass water-throwing fight.
The fun kicks off at 11am in the morning with the ‘lanzamiento de agua’ (water throwing) contest, followed by a family water run at 1.30pm, when the sun is shining.
Later in the day, the tone in town changes and excitement grows. Bus loads of revellers arrive for the main feature – the big water run through the main street of Lanjarón between midnight and 1am.
