First ‘Rustic festival’, held in Spain’s Lanjarón spa town, proves a resounding success

A NEW cultural and fusion music festival, promoted by Raúl Soto of popular flamenco-influenced band, Arrímate al Queré (yes, tricky to pronounce) has proved an instant success in the spa town of Lanjarón, in Granada region.

Arrímate al Queré is a group that combines flamenco with a Latin flavour, folklore, and art. This approach was reflected through the three-day event organised by Arrimate Booking, in conjunction with the Lanjarón town hall, taking place in the Parque de Salao, Lanjaron from 12-14 April.

Showing a well-organised, professional approach, the Rustic festival featured family-based entertainment during the day, and with bands at night. The idea was to “bring together values related to nature, the gastronomy of the Alpujarreña region, as well as its history, heritage and craftsmanship.”

Around 600 visitors enjoyed yoga, hiking routes, choir, jam sessions, singing, comedy, flamenco, masterclasses, and DJs, as well as food concessions and traditional Alpujarran produce. The town was uncharacteristically full of vehicles, including vans and campers, which had their own designated areas.

It was reminiscent to Lanjarón’s answer to a mini Etno Sur, but in a more confined space.

The crowd on the Saturday night – this being the only day requiring an entry fee of 20e in advance or 30e at the gate – was predominantly Spanish. Many revellers and flamenco aficionados hailed from Granada and further afield. Some people were wearing glitter face paint, or following a rustic theme. A pleasant vibe predominated and the Flamenco performers, on stage, were clearly full of ‘alegria’.

Toni Romero, Lanjarón’s councillor for culture, has stated: “This first edition is expected to be the first of many. We want the Rustic Festival to be held every year. Raúl and the entire organisation must be thanked for the extensive programme of activities they have configured.”

  • Lanjarón is also renowned for its famous mass water fight that takes annually on the night of 23 June, to coincide with the fiesta of San Juan, as well as the annual Lanjarock festival on 27-28 July.
