Granada illustrator, Lunita Loca, shines the light on completing a 100-day online art challenge

SOCIAL MEDIA challenges come and go, and are certainly not for everyone. However, a female artist from Granada region is leading the way in completing a (possibly gruelling) 100-day challenge with her vibrant and uplifting digital illustrations, as well as process videos that show how they are done,

Living on an olive farm in the moutains of La Alpujarra, Star has a passion for creating “emotive art full of colour”. She uses prompt words suggested by online friends as the basis of her daily artworks. She is producing one illustration every day, as part of the 100-day challenge, and the results are well-received by social media users.

Says Star: “I’m inspired by the the nature that surrounds us and our vibrant community. It was during the first few weeks of lockdown in 2019 that I re-discovered my love for drawing after putting any dreams of being an artist to bed when I was a teenager. I found it deeply healing to be creative and express myself, while I tried to make sense of what was happening at the time. Then, in the summer of 2022, during a new moon, I was stung by a scorpion. This jolted me out of an intense healing period, gave me a new confidence, and inspired me to be more creative and share my art again. Lunita Loca (crazy little moon) was born.”

Star found that she was a prolific creator, with art “pouring out at great speed”. She has exhibited her works and sells them at local markets and online.

Speaking of her current project, she says: “The100DayProject is a free, global art project that takes place online. Every year, thousands of people all around the world commit to 100 days of creating and sharing their creations on social media.”

I’m almost half way through the project now. The idea is simple: I draw an illustration every single day for 100 days and share my process on my social accounts. With this undertaking, I’m freeing myself creatively by taking less time to think about what I’m drawing. I instinctively draw what comes into my head straight away, not getting wrapped up in perfectionism! I’m discovering new techniques, themes and characters, and have surprised myself with some of the creations I’ve done. In particular, I’ve found a character that keeps re-appearing through the project – a gentle mountain giant. I would love to create a children’s book with him.”

Once the 100 days are complete, Star hopes to exhibit the artworks.
